Plan a service of sung compline, also known as the final prayer at the end of the day. The service can be sung by your choir or professional singers.
Invite your congregation to sit in a candlelit house of worship or dimly lit gathering space to pray, meditate, or simply sit in the experience. (remember the compelling research from Dr. Newberg at the Peace of Mind Symposium at the Carter Center which points to the positive effects on the brain when meditation/prayer is practiced!)
Come unplugged, requesting everyone to put away phones, screens and daily stressors as they prepare for the evening. Following the service, offer an optional time of refreshments and community.
This can be done in conjunction with the Longest Night of the Year, which is Saturday, December 21, 2024. Light shines in the darkness and the darkness does not overcome it. Many will be missing a loved one this holiday season and this letter of encouragement may be a source of support for your congregation. Feel free to share it through your faith place communications.
